Biofuel mix missing targets

Posted on Tuesday, 12 August 2008 12:49PM by
New statistics have revealed that most of the biofuel sold on garage forecourts is imported from overseas.

The Renewable Fuels Agency said that Brazilian sugarcane and American soy are the main sources for making biodiesel and bioethanol.

The leaning towards fuels derived from crops has been seen as a potentially lucrative new market for UK growers, but the latest RFA figures, covering the month from April to May 2008, show that the market has been "dominated by imports".

All garages in the UK have had to sell some biofuels in their fuel mix since April in a move aimed at reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

Conservationists pointed out that the news backed up their claims that a hasty rush to use biofuels could do more harm than good, by accelerating the loss of South American rainforests.
