A Devon primary school has received grants from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, EDF Energy, and the Co-operative Group to install a £60,000 biomass boiler powered by burning wood pellets. The school is one of over 180 UK wide to receive a grant from the Co-operative’s Green Energy for Schools scheme.
Pupils at Gulworthy Primary School near Tavistock will be able to monitor how much energy is being produced, and the amount of carbon dioxide emissions saved by switching to the microgeneration system. The biomass boiler will not only make the school more sustainable, but it will also provide a useful teaching resource for the children and for the wider community regarding renewable energy.
The Co-operative invested £1 million to install solar panels at over 100 UK schools in 2007. The group has now set aside an additional £1 million for the second phase to help 80 schools install biomass boilers, solar panels, ground source heat pumps, and wind turbines.
