Cable Recycling? Get the Lowdown on Cable Strippers

Posted on Sunday, 02 November 2008 04:24PM by Graham Barker
Firstly, if you came to this page from a Google search for “strippers” you are going to be pretty disappointed.  Hit the back button and go on your merry way, or take a cold shower and make an effort to get out a little bit more.

If on the other hand you are from the world of waste and recycling, and you are looking for cable strippers or information about cable strippers and how they can be used to recycle cable then you have come to the right place.

Cable strippers are pretty simple pieces of kit really.  They work by passing single pieces of cable through a machine which cuts through the outer sheaths thus liberating the exotic and valuable central cores, normally copper or aluminium.

Cable strippers for the small operator:
The small types of cable strippers have a single cutting blade which is manually adjusted to cut through the outer protective layer of a cable, enabling access to the valuable inner core.  The passage of the cable is mechanically driven, normally by a V shaped drive wheel with the blade pushing the cable into the base of the V, cutting through the outer sheathing.

Advantages of small cable strippers:
Processing capabilities of 3 mm cable up to 70 mm cable with single sheath not exceeding 5 mm.  Very cost effective.

Disadvantages of small cable strippers:
Requires double insulated cable to be re introduced to the blade.
Will only cut through material up to approximately 5 mm (rubber, plastic, nylon, lead).
Time consuming on very small cables 3 mm in size and less.

Cable strippers for the medium sized operator:
The medium sized cable strippers have both a single blade facility and a multi blade system built in.
As with their smaller cousins these cable strippers require the cable to be manually fed piece by piece into the drive wheel or wheels.
However with the use of multi blades, more than one layer of sheathing can be cut at once or with the use of the very robust single blade, much larger and thicker layers of insulation can be cut.
Processing capabilities of medium cable strippers - 3 mm cable up to 70 mm including heavy insulated, quadrant, low grade cable and armoured cable.

Advantages of medium cable strippers:
Covers a larger range of cable sizes
Very cost effective
Simple and safe to set up and operate
Excellent return on low grade, small, single sheathed cables, and multi sheathed and heavy industrial cables

Disadvantages of medium cable strippers:
May require more operator knowledge for set up work.
Needs a regimented service regime to guarantee a high throughput of material.

Cable strippers for the medium & large operator:
Working on a similar principle as their small and medium sized siblings, these machines have the ability to handle much larger cables.
Up to 250 mm diameter cable in most cases can be processed in just one pass; the normal feed stock for these machines is underground cable with lead or aluminium outer sheathing, with a copper or aluminium centre core buried in a centre section of plastic, nylon or greasy paper covering.
Processing capabilities of larger cable strippers - 50 mm cable up to 250 mm cable including heavy insulated, quadrant and heavy armoured cable.

Advantages of larger cable strippers:
Very robust construction
Able to be fed directly from large cable reels (timber and steel)
Removes the greasy paper and bitumen cores that would otherwise contaminate a granulation plant
Larger cable strippers can handle very large cables

Disadvantages of larger cable strippers:
Requires extensive operator knowledge for set up work.
Needs a regimented service regime to guarantee a high throughput of material.
