Lincolnshire's new Energy from Waste facility

Posted on Thursday, 26 June 2008 10:35AM by
A new Energy from Waste facility is planned in North Hykeham, Lincolnshire. It means that Lincolnshire County Council can get rid of waste safely and get something back from it in the form of green electricity.  Currently 360,000 tonnes of household waste are collected and disposed of in Lincolnshire each year. This is a pile of rubbish bigger than Lincoln Cathedral.

The amount is increasing each year by about 1.7%. Lincolnshire County Council is responsible for the disposal of all household waste in Lincolnshire.  About 40% of this waste is currently recycled or composted. The rest gets buried in landfill sites. Landfill sites are getting full and are not environmentally friendly in the long term, and the council is getting taxed more each year by the government and there are also EU fines to pay. This could mean finding an extra £15 million each year in Lincolnshire.

The Lincolnshire Waste Partnership are taking to the road until 27 July, to provide a series of road shows aiming to explain to residents how more of the county’s non-recyclable waste can be diverted away from landfill using the new facility.

Councillor Lewis Strange, new Chairman of the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership and Lincolnshire County Council Executive Member for Waste, said:
We want to hear everyone’s thoughts and ensure that people are fully informed on what promises to be an exciting and crucial project for the county.
Waste contains vital energy which is being wasted by ending up in landfill, where the substances break down and pollute the atmosphere.  The new facility will harness this energy and put it to good use.  We anticipate the facility will handle 150,000 tonnes of waste each year to meet Lincolnshire’s needs and the energy this produces could meet the requirements of local businesses or homes. The facility will also create a number of skilled jobs and help in the fight against climate change by cutting methane emission from landfill and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels."

The location for the Energy from Waste facility in North Hykeham, which was first identified in the Local Waste Plan, is situated to the south of Lincoln on Whisby Road, just off the A46, and is next to an existing landfill site.

Earlier this month, award-winning architects Studio E were appointed to create a facility that will be “aesthetically refined and environmentally responsible”.
