Plans to create a landfill site for household waste in Huddersfield have sparked fears from people living nearby. The Johnson’s Wellfield Quarries firm wants to change the type of waste it can put in its quarry off Sandy Lane, Crosland Hill.
The firm was given permission by Kirklees Council in 1997 to extract minerals and then deposit waste at the site, Waterholes Extension Quarry. One of the conditions said the quarry must be filled in with ‘inert’ materials, such as aggregate or rubble, by 2014. But a slowdown in the building industry means there is a shortage of such materials.
The firm has now asked Kirklees for permission to fill it with household waste. The landfill site would be operated by SITA, the company responsible for disposing of council waste in Kirklees. The waste going into the site would be rubbish that cannot be incinerated or recycled by Kirklees Council which is currently sent to other districts for landfill.
The campaigners became aware of the plan when Kirklees put up 14 notices in the Crosland Hill and Beaumont Park areas. What would go into the landfill could be anything that goes into a black bin bag,and campaigners fear the effect the area would suffer from vermin, flies, smell, traffic and noise.
