Resourcefulness, innovation and lateral thinking are always key elements in running a business, and there has never been a time when they have been required more than now. The current tough economic climate dictates that to survive in these hard times, business owners involved in waste and recycling are having to re-think what they do and how they do it.
Some collectors and processors have decided to stockpile material over the last few weeks, in the hope that prices will increase.
Some are continuing to buy waste in and processing it immediately to maintain cashflow.
Many are looking at alternative markets, and different ways to process their waste materials, determined to produce an end product that is usable and marketable.
What this does mean too is that processors are buying used recycling machinery and equipment, rather than new. They are repairing rather than replacing. They are also processing material which has been somewhat overlooked in the recent good times, for instance we have spoken to a number of processors who are concentrating on stripping tons of cable which they have accumulated. Previously, whilst prices were high, this cable was considered too labour intensive to bother with, but now it is worth stripping and recycling. This is just one example of how the recycling industry adapts to tough times; and there are many more we’ve come across.
Let’s face it – the waste and recycling industry has always been resourceful in the face of adversity, and it will no doubt continue to be so. We all expect when we take a rollercoaster ride, to rise and fall and rush round corners at breakneck speed, and we always finish on an inevitable high. These things go in cycles – we may be in a dip right now – but there’s almost definitely another peak just around the corner.
