Top Tips for a Greener Business

Saving Paper - Top tips for businesses

The first thing to consider is how you might be able to reduce the amount of waste paper your business generates. If you cut down on the amount of paper you use you will not only save money on purchases but also save money on recycling, and you will be helping the environment too.

Top ten tips for keeping the waste paper down in your business:

1. Think carefully about the paper you buy for the office; only buy what you need and make sure you choose a paper that can be recycled. Aim to buy a proportion of recycled paper for office use.

2. Send faxes from your PC’s rather than printing a copy and using the fax machine. This saves time as well as paper.

3. Use email rather than sending letters where you can.

4. Don't print out emails and other correspondence unless you really need to.

5. Encourage others not to print out emails by inserting a polite note at the bottom of the emails you send out.

6. Back up your computer files so that you don't feel you have to print out a hard copy as your back up.

7. If you want to print out to check your work, use the blank side of used paper.  Try setting a limit on the number of times drafts are printed; you will save time as well as paper.

8. Print on both sides of the paper rather than just one, or use the other side of used paper for making lists and note taking.

9. Ask staff to think before they throw paper away; re-use it if they can and always add it to a recycling bin rather than a general waste bin.

10. When the paper is no longer of use then recycle the paper rather than throwing it in with the general waste.
